May/June 2008

Happy Spring Stillhouse sailors! Hard to believe it is May already. It is typical spring in Texas with weather all over the map. The marina has been very busy early in the season, especially weekends,  with the nice weather and most all parks closed except Stillhouse Hollow Park. Looks like a very busy summer ahead.  I will be sailing in different waters for a couple of weeks at end of May and first of June so this Ragtimes is also for June.

Social News

We had a great time at the April  social ! The evening started out with a little drama from  mother  nature. Everyone made it safely to Linda’s Taqueria after a heavy storm brought hail and tornados to Belton and   Salado. We enjoyed Linda’s  fantastic  Mexican food  for dinner- it is some of the best around. It is nice to have the restaurant just for our group. … John, Judy, Marty , Becky, John, Joe,  Steve, Shirley ,  Melanie, Tommy, BJ , Pat, Jim and  his Dad Stephen.  After dinner, we followed each other over to Shirley and Steve’s lovely place in Salado for dessert and more social time. It was a lovely evening.

May Social: Friday May 30th

Summer Moonlight Sailing: Friday May 16th 6:00 PM

Each month throughout the summer we will meet at the lake on a Friday near the full moon. This is an informal gathering for supper and moonlight sailing as weather permits. Bring something to cook out on the grill or get some of the delicious fried catfish at the marina. We will meet around 6:00 PM. No RSVP needed- just come on down and bring your friends!!

June Social will be an event at the lake to be announced later by Joe!!

Racing News

Burning of the Socks Series Winner is Steve Wesson!!

What an interesting series race!! The weather proved to be a bit of a challenge with high winds for several races. One race was scrapped altogether due to inclement weather. Two weeks ago, we had one boat blown to shore (me) and one broken toe (James). Last week for the final race, there were only two brave contenders on the water with the heavy winds. Steve and Marty happened to be tied for first place going into that last race (guess who the two racers were). Winds were very heavy…It was a Freedom day and Steve took the series with Marty coming in second place. Results of the series are attached. Steve got the grand prize of some Bond’s Foot Powder and some nice foot towels!! Congratulations Steve!!

Series Race # 2: Summer Solstice Series   May 14- June 11

Join us for more racing fun with the 2nd series race of the season. Marty is planning another special prize for the winner! We have a great time on these evenings and socialize after the race. If you do not race, feel free to come out for cruising and join us at the dock for some snacks and social time after sailing. The water is warming up and should be good for swimming soon!!

HOT Regatta Sept 5-7

We are continuing planning for the Heart of Texas Regatta. We have the permit from the Corps of Engineers to hold the race. We are still working on sponsors. David Luckenbach/ Sailing Texas, Rick Smith/Marine Outlet have donated.  If you have an idea for sponsorship please contact Melanie.

This and That

The marina is hosted the annual Chamber of Commerce group on Tuesday April 15th.   John Costello and Joe Partridge participated by taking Chamber members for a sailboat ride. Thanks Joe and John for supporting the marina!

Are you interested in helping with a one day sailing clinic for the Sea Scouts group this summer?  I need to get a general idea of who may be willing to assist by allowing use of a boat, providing instruction or helping with cooking some burgers or something after the activity.  Melanie needs to know if you are interested.

Warmer weather and water are finally getting closer. John Costello will soon be working to replace the Dan Chapman anchor mooring. The Dive Club has generously volunteered to dive and locate the anchor. John Costello will coordinate things from our end- the needed supplies, coordinating with Edwin to plan the replacement. If you would like to help with this project – contact John Costello.

If you have pictures of club events to share please email them to webmaster Gary at garyab@mac.com  Gary has created a nice photos page! There will be photos of the social there soon.

Melanie is away 28 May-12 June. If you need something contact Joe or other board members. John will check the club email.

Happy Sailing – see you on the lake!
